FROM CORPORATE GIANT TO AGILE ECOSYSTEM
David has worked with radical innovation and lean start-up methods in small businesses and large global corporations for the last 20 years – e.g. as Head of Innovation at Scandinavian Airlines, as Senior Innovation Director in LEGO’s Future Lab, and recently as Venture Partner in LEGO Ventures.
Using design thinking and agile development, David has been developing and leading innovation units and projects from early incubation to full maturity. He has recently been instrumental in building and launching LEGO Ventures, the new strategic venture arm at the LEGO Brand Group. David is co-founder of Diplomatic Rebels; a company dedicated to empower companies and intrapreneurs around the world to become stronger innovators.
Diplomatic Rebels is born out of the work of LEGO’s radical innovation department Future Lab. A legendary unit made with the cause of developing the future of LEGO. Instead of thinking about which bricks should be on the shelves next season the unit had to think beyond bricks, in making sure LEGO would also be relevant for kids five years from now.
LEGO’s Future Lab,is a secretive and highly experimental R&D team responsible for keeping the company on the forefront of the development.
The group, which is called the Future Lab, is the Danish toy giant’s secretive and highly ambitious R&D team, charged with inventing entirely new, technologically enhanced “play experiences” for kids all over the world.
The Future Lab’s headquarters are in an aging two-story yellow-brick building across the plaza, intentionally separate from the other design groups. Entrance requires several swipes of an ID card, and only the staff assigned to the group and a handful of the most senior management have access. It’s a clandestine place within a generally close-to-the-vest company. (Even staffers’ spouses have no idea what their partners spend their days working on.)
Over time Diplomatic Rebels turned into an approach and a methodology. A way to navigate the bureaucratic world of a company, where you want to change the organisation for the sake of the organisation.
As an experienced senior executive and executive advisor, David is using his passion for breakthrough innovation to inspire and infuse this new mindset and toolbox in organizations around the world, on how to structure and lead innovation more effectively. The stories and insights address some of the key challenges with innovation and transformation in larger organizations providing both executives and intrapreneurs with concrete tools and methods as well as inspiration on how to lead and drive innovation and digital transformation more successfully.
